Safety tips for student travel

Travelling in a new place or at night can be daunting. Stay safe by following these tips:

  • Plan your travel. Research the area and know exactly how you’re going to get around before setting off. Only travel in trusted ways.
  • Have a backup plan (especially when travelling at night) in case something goes wrong, like missing your train or getting lost.
  • Fully charge your phone before setting off.
  • Travel together. Where possible, travel with friends.
  • Stay connected by sharing your location with friends and family so they know you’re safe.
  • Stick to well-lit areas in public places where possible.
  • Conceal your valuables and don’t walk around with your phone out.
  • If you feel uncomfortable, find a public place like a shop, restaurant or well-lit place. If you feel unsafe, find someone and ask for help.

A healthy, eco-friendly way of getting around your local area is by foot or on wheels. It’s an ideal way to explore your campus and local area while getting out in the open.

If you’re walking, stick to public footpaths and avoid walking at night, especially in darker areas. If you’re cycling, stick to cycle paths where possible. Cycle on roads with care and use safety equipment to protect yourself.

If you’re leaving your bike, use official bike storage with a D-lock/U-lock. You can use two locks for added protection, especially on detachable wheels.

Some towns and cities, like Swansea, offer bike and e-scooter hire. A great way to explore at low cost.
