Sir Thomas John Woodward OBE, better known as the superstar Tom Jones, has come a long way from those early days but has never forgotten his Welsh roots. Born in Pontypridd in 1940, his recognisable "full-throated, robust baritone" has taken him across the pond to Las Vegas, and all around the globe, earning him sales in excess of 100 million records worldwide, and numerous accolades, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor, Grammy and Brit Awards, and an MTV Video Music Award. Jones was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1998 and given a knighthood in 2005. 

With impressive collections, Pontypridd Museum tells the story of the region, from its Neolithic past to the modern town. With a year-round programme of events and shows, this museum-cum-art-gallery has something to suit every taste. But for something altogether cuter, the Pit Pony Sanctuary is well worth a visit. Providing a caring, safe home to needy neddies, this charity encourages visitors to mix with the ponies, so get hands-on with these fortunate animals. They even offer sponsorship, complete with free gifts and posters of your chosen equine chum - perfect for a pony mad child, or adult!
