Arriving in Hereford, take a minute to absorb the historical charm of this beautiful cathedral city. Rich with culture, this well preserved English icon was originally considered to be Welsh. So close to the border, King Richard I of England declared Hereford a Welsh settlement in the 12th-century. On the banks of the River Wye, the area is known for producing the most delicious cider, beer and of course, the curly forelocked, red and white Hereford beef cattle. An important centre for trade throughout the centuries, the city is home to fine examples of architecture, including Blackfriars Monastery and Booth Hall.

Head for the cathedral to see something Game of Thrones fans will easily recognise - Podrick’s beloved chained library. As in the citadel, these ancient tomes are chained together, ensuring their security - unless, like Pod, you have the key! Another important historical artefact lives here, too. The Mappa Mundi is the oldest surviving map of the world as it was known then. This medieval manuscript shows the fearsome sea monsters and demons that were believed to walk the earth, sea and sky, and was created by religious scholars. The cathedral itself offers more mythological beasts - carved this time into the dark golden wood of the choir stalls and 14th-century misericords.

Another must-visit is the Black and White House Museum. Behind the stunning facade are impressive collections of ancient relics and artefacts sourced locally and from around the globe. It has some really exciting, interactive displays for children, allowing them to have fun and learn at the same time!

If you’re seeking retail therapy, Hereford has a great range of high street big names, and a surprising number of designer labels have outlets here. However, for something more unusual, there are plenty of independent boutique stores scattered throughout the city. Showcasing local talent, you can find real treasures in these quaint stores. Lovely chunky knits, hand-thrown pottery, and artisan silver jewellery, or maybe delicious pastries and sweet fudges - whatever you’re hunting for, you’ll find it here.
