Take in the view of the town and out across the bay - it’s jaw-dropping, and there’s even a Camera Obscura. Originally built in the grounds of the castle in 1880, but was relocated for a more impressive view. With a huge 14-inch lens, it’s one of the largest examples in the world. The original site of the Camera Obscura, the well cared for castle gardens surround the ruins of the once-majestic castle. Built in the mid-1200s, on top of the ruins of a previous building, during the reign of King Edward I, it changed hands several times. During the 1282 war, it was reclaimed by the Welsh, but in 1410 it returned to the English. The Civil War saw the castle being used as a Royal mint which was slighted by Oliver Cromwell in 1649. Today it’s well worth a visit, still standing proud over the town, and surrounded by beautiful landscaped gardens, perfect for a relaxing stroll. Listen carefully and you may still hear the cries of the soldiers still said to haunt the battlements!

Head for The Silver Mountain Experience to discover life underground by exploring the tunnels of a 19th-century mine. Preserved and added to, these tunnels are part of a celebration of the Welsh mining industry. Above ground, you can see the huge machinery and working water wheels designed to facilitate the mining of coal. It’s a fascinating insight into bygone days.

For the retail lover, the shopping district of Aberystwyth has all the high street names, with enough designer labels to keep every fashionista happy. If you’re after something more unusual, take a look in the independent boutiques for hand made jewellery or studio glass and pottery. Beautifully cosy knitwear, ceramics and locally produced delicacies are just waiting for you. Why not pick up some delicious homemade Welsh shortbread or clotted cream fudge for the journey home?
