Whether you’re travelling for business or for pleasure, it’s easy to catch the train from Chester to Bangor. The route takes you through some of the most glorious scenery Wales has to offer on the one hour journey, and has several ticket options, including first class, advanced, or Anytime Day.

Bangor, in Gwynedd, Northwest Wales, is not only the oldest city in Wales, but one of the smallest in the whole of the UK, and thanks to its status as a university city, is gloriously cosmopolitan, with a thriving cultural heart.

Live departures and arrivals

One sight definitely worth seeing is the granite faced Penrhyn Castle. Behind the stern facade, the opulence and dark extravagance makes this a fascinating attraction, set in impressive gardens, leading to open forests, wild nature trails and spectacular vistas. Equally dramatic is Bangor Cathedral, towards the west of the city, where it rubs shoulders with the University campus. This 6th Century site of worship has a well kept secret within its walled gardens. Carefully and lovingly tended, its Biblical Garden contains specimens of every plant mentioned within the Bible, and is well worth a visit.

Culture vultures can enjoy the Storiel, where museum, art gallery and handmade craft designs mingle. Relax, grab a coffee and a slice of homemade cake before heading off to catch a show, while retail excitement seekers can be pleased they’ve found the longest high street in Wales, accompanied by, if needed, two shopping centres. Housing all the big  high street brands, alongside smaller arcades full of fascinating boutiques, Bangor is a hidden gem for shopaholics.

For those who seek the challenges of the natural world, Bangor is the perfect starting place for a trek up Snowdon, or Yr Wyddfa as its known in Welsh. This glorious landmark is the tallest mountain in England and Wales, offering views over Anglesey, Pembrokeshire and out to Ireland. With several routes up to the peak and the weather being increasingly changeable the higher you climb, it’s a good idea to be well prepared with a fully stocked backpack, just in case.
