Overview
Hawarden Bridge station serves the Flintshire town of Shotton, and lies on the Borderlands route. Opened in September 1924 next to the local steelworks, which kept the trains busy until the works closed, making 6,000 staff unemployed, in 1980.
Hawarden Bridge, which gave the station its name, spans the River Dee, and was opened by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway in 1889. This Grade II listed structure was the UK’s largest swing bridge when built, allowing boats to transport goods down the river without becoming trapped. Hawarden Bridge underwent a major restoration in 2010, ensuring it continues to be an important part of the local transport routes.
The pretty town of Shotton, just a short distance to the west of Chester, grew up around the coal mining and steel industries and is one of the few places in the country not to have a Welsh name.
How long does it take to walk from Hawarden Bridge station to Shotton town centre?
