Overview

Originally opened in 1850, nothing now remains of Swansea's old wooden station building. Throughout the years, renovations, a major rebuild in 1880, and platform extensions in the 1920s, have led to the impressive, four-platform, building it is today.

The contemporary design includes impressive glass walls flooding the area with light, creating a bright, open feel. Above the main entrance are engraved the words 'Ambition is critical', part of a 1990 poetry competition. The poet, David Hughes was responding to the town's rather dire nickname - the Graveyard of Ambition. In three words, he has successfully portrayed the modern Swansea, as a hub for culture, production and, yes, ambition.
