Magnificent Train Journey Winners

Back in 2021, we challenged the school children of Wales and the borders to give proud identities to over 150 brand-new trains that were joining our fleet. We asked them to come up with names for our new trains, based on either a real place, landmark or mythical figure associated with Wales and its borders. We also requested a creative explanation of why they chose the name, such as a painting or drawing, a poem or short story.

Ceiliog Coch Rhiwabon/Ruabon Ruby Rooster

Named by Ruby | Oxon CE Primary School | Mid Wales | Regional Winner: Mid Wales and Borders

I was eating my cornflakes and I wondered why they have a rooster on the box. I asked my Dad and we looked on the internet. Here is what we found. There was a lady called Nansi Richards. She was born is a place called Oswestry. She went to America to play the harp and met a man called Will Kellogg. She told him that his name sounded like the Welsh name for a rooster. The Welsh word for rooster is ceiliog. Mr Kellogg liked this and it gave him an idea. He decided to put a rooster on every box of cornflakes he made. He even used the colours of the Welsh flag, red, white and green for the rooster.

I chose the name Ruabon Ruby Rooster because Ruabon is on the same line as Oswestry where Nansi was born. Ruby is the colour of the top of the rooster and it is my name too. The rooster will now always remind me of Wales and this story. When I grow up I want to be a train driver and maybe I will get to drive the Ruabon Ruby Rooster.
