We'll do what it takes

We’ve been working hard to build the transport network you deserve. We might not be Wales’ favourite way to travel yet.

But that’s our aim and we’ll do what it takes to get there.

It’s because of our team’s commitment and determination that we know we will. A tenacious bunch of perseverers, never-giver-uppers, relentless in their pursuit of providing you with a more reliable, sustainable and affordable way to travel.

We know how important it is to hear from you, which is why we recently shared a survey on our socials, to understand what you think and where we can improve… you didn’t hold back but it wasn’t all bad.

Thankfully, many of you are noticing the improvements we’ve made across the network so far, which we hope gives you a flavour of the future.

And because we know that a lot of what we’re working on may not be immediately obvious, here are some examples of how we’re doing what it takes.

So, what have we been up to?

Some of the ways we’re already doing what it takes

Rail

  • Your new Metro depot and Integrated Control Centre in Taff’s Well is now fully operational, maintaining 36 tram-trains and increasing local employment opportunities.

  • Your brand-new timetable for the South Wales Valleys now includes more frequent services between Pontypridd, Caerphilly, Rhymney and Cardiff.

  • Brand-new trains (231s) are now running on the Rhymney lines.

  • The Treherbert line has now reopened. We know that 9 months of transformation work and bus replacements was difficult, but upgrading infrastructure dating back to the 1930s took us some time.

  • The Merthyr, Aberdare, Treherbert and Pontypridd lines to Cardiff are now electrified, meaning more sustainable and faster rail travel. With the Coryton and lower Rhymney line following soon.

Since 2022 we’ve replaced nearly 50% of our fleet with new trains

Active travel

  • TfW plays a key role in the management of the Active Travel Fund of behalf of Welsh Government.  Last year we supported all 22 Welsh Local Authorities (LA’s) to specifically develop and construct £46m of active travel infrastructure.  These enhancements aim to make every day journeys easier for the people of Wales to make sustainable travel choices.

  • We’re planning and developing active travel routes to help make walking, wheeling or cycling for everyday journeys easier.

  • We’re proactively supporting LA’s through the delivery of workshops and training to highlight best practice, providing useful assets and encourage collaboration.

  • We’re supporting the mapping our active travel network to make it easier for you to walk, wheel or cycle within your community.

  • We’re working with partners to create safe, pleasant and accessible public spaces for our communities.

  • Working with local authorities and housing associations, we’re improving cycle parking facilities on-street cycle storage including bike hangars.
