Welcoming e-bikes on National Cycle Route 5
Conwy County Borough Council decided to provide electric bike storage facilities with charging points and maintenance stands at key locations along National Cycle Route 5. This was in response to the increasing popularity of e-bikes and NCN5 as a long-distance cycling route.
The aims were:
- to support cyclists using e-bikes for work or leisure.
- to support greener active travel as part of the council’s commitment to Conwy becoming carbon net zero by 2030.
Description
The council secured funding from the Welsh Government for e-bike storage, charging and maintenance stands. Suitable locations were identified on NCN5 near existing power supplies.
To help keep bikes safe, sturdy stands were built with charging points that allow the battery to be securely locked inside the charging compartment. To help cyclists maintain their bikes, toolkits were added with a hex key set, screwdrivers, wrenches, a tyre lever, tyre pump and PSI gauge.
Outputs
Ten e-bike stands have been built along NCN5. These are located in Conwy, Kimnel Bay, Llandudno, Llanfairfechan, Old Colwyn, Penmaenmawr, Penrhyn Bay, Pensarn and Rhos on Sea.
The project has received positive feedback on social media channels.
