Spatial Cortex Technology emerged as the winner of cohort 2 for their ground-breaking product, MOVA. This wearable technology is designed to address the challenges faced by railway staff when it comes to manual handling tasks, including lifting, carrying, and manipulating materials.

The unique features of MOVA technology and its potential were explored within the TfW acceleration programme to revolutionise the industry by reducing manual handling injuries. The partnership between Spatial Cortex and the Lab By Transport for Wales, along with their strategic partnership with Amey, underscores the significance of the technology and its impact on railway staff safety.

MVP overview and industry advancement

Spatial Cortex Technology’s MOVA is an innovative wearable technology specifically developed for railway staff. It aims to minimize the risk of manual handling injuries during various tasks, including trackside work, depot operations, and maintenance activities. MOVA’s unique proposition lies in its ability to provide quantitative assessments and profound insights, surpassing the limitations of existing risk-assessment practices.

Work package 1 and 2: Sleeper change and fleet tasks

The partnership between Spatial Cortex and TfW conducted Work Package 1 and 2 to evaluate MOVA’s effectiveness. Work Package 1 focused on a sleeper change scenario, exploring how additional tools integrated with MOVA could reduce the strain on a person’s spine during the task.

This assessment demonstrated the potential of MOVA in enhancing worker safety and ergonomics. Work Package 2 expanded the evaluation to fleet tasks, including brake changes, cleaning activities, and shunting. MOVA’s technology showcased its adaptability and efficacy across a range of common railway tasks, providing valuable insights into reducing manual handling injuries.
