Cardiff Castle is an impressive mediaeval castle located in the south of Wales, UK. History
Cardiff Castle began life as a Roman Fort established around 50 AD. The site was chosen because of its easy access to the sea and high vantage point. It was built in stone and some of the ruins can still be seen today. After the Roman Empire fell the fort was left to ruin, until it was discovered by the Normans and remodelled. The castle has been home to many aristocrats and noble families. During the second world war air raid shelters were built into the castle’s walls and these shelters could protect up to 2000 people. The castle was last owned by the Bute family, who eventually gifted it to the city of Cardiff, where it remains a big draw for tourists and local residents alike.
Architecture
The castle is situated on top of a hill overlooking the city of Cardiff. It is surrounded by a moat and has several towers, including a keep, which is the tallest tower. The keep was used as a defence against attackers during mediaeval times. What’s more, the castle also has a chapel, which was built in the 14th century. The chapel contains stained glass windows and is decorated with carved stone figures. The castle grounds are also home to a museum, which contains artefacts from the castle's history.
The original motte and bailey structure was built by the Normans, making it one of the oldest castles still standing in Britain today. The castle was later rebuilt and expanded by successive rulers, including King Edward I, who added the magnificent octagonal towers that dominate the skyline. Cardiff Castle has been witness to many historic events over the centuries, including periods of siege during the English Civil War and World War II.
