We’re transforming your railway at Taff’s Well
We’re continuing our work at Taff’s Well to build our brand-new depot site, the heart of the South Wales Metro programme. Over the coming weeks, we’re progressing with our work to reopen Ffordd Bleddyn road.
Our work to complete Ffordd Bleddyn Road
As we move closer to the reopening of Ffordd Bleddyn Road we need to undertake some essential works to ensure that both Ffordd Bleddyn Road and Cardiff Road are safe for use by vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. These works include resurfacing both roads to reinstate the surface disturbed during previous work and the installation of a new traffic management system.
Ffordd Bleddyn Road closure
This’ll involve a short and temporary closure of the section of Ffordd Bleddyn between the New Adventure Travel depot roundabout and the railway station (section shown in red on map below), on the following weekend:
- From 19:00 on Friday 17 May to 05:00 Monday 20 May
The road will remain open for pedestrians, and the station passengers on foot, however those driving to the station will need to plan ahead and use other Park and Ride facilities, such as Radyr station. There will also be a small number of parking spaces at Delyn Warehousing in Taffs Well.
Ffordd Bleddyn Road closure
Access for vehicles into the Moy Road industrial estate will remain in place, with access available up to the Adventure Travel depot roundabout.
We aim to reopen Ffordd Bleddyn under a single lane traffic system on 31 May 2024. This will allow traffic to flow in both directions, controlled by traffic lights and allow pedestrian access via the footpath on the station side. We then aim to reopen the road fully later this year.
- Red - temporary closure on weekend of 17 - 20 May
- Orange - closed until 31 May 2024 (when it will reopen as a single lane for vehicles and a footpath for pedestrians)
Cardiff Road closure
We’ll also need to close Cardiff Road whilst we conduct works to resurface and reinstate the carriageway that was disturbed during planned works carried out during previous road closures. We’ll also be installing a new traffic management system.
Cardiff Road (section shown in red) is currently scheduled to be closed over the following overnight date in May:
- From 20:00 Thursday 30 May to 05:00 Friday 31 May
Cardiff Road closure
Diversions
A fully signposted diversion will be in place during the closures, and we’ll place ‘business as usual’ signage in the community. Access to Cemetery Road, Ty Rhiw and Brynau Road will be maintained throughout. Taff’s Well station and the station car park will also remain open throughout.
The diversion route for the Cardiff Road closure is shown in blue. Emergency service vehicles will also use this route. The route into Taff’s Well village is shown in purple and is prohibited for our HGV’s and lorries.
During the closure of Cardiff Road, we advise drivers travelling into Taff’s Well from Northbound on the A470 to take the A4054/A468 exit towards Treforest, exiting the A470, then taking the 1st exit onto Cardiff Rd/A4054 at the roundabout.
The pedestrian and cyclist diversions can be found on the map below, with the orange route showing the step-free diversion route, and the pink showing the diversion route using the footbridges over the Taff Trail and A470. The green route shows the diversion for cyclists, which joins onto the Taff Trail. The stepped footbridge at Taff’s Well station, shown via the yellow route, will be open as usual throughout the road closure, along with Portabello crossing.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council will be running a shuttle bus service throughout the closure. The 132E shuttle service will run between Taffs Well Railway Station, the Taffs Well Inn and Cross Keys Caerphilly Road and more detail will be available online in the coming weeks.
Closure of Taff Trail
We’ll be carrying out work to resurface a 50m section of the footpath of the Taff Trail between Taffs Well Football Club and the Taffs Well Depot on Friday 10 May 2024 (see map below). This’ll require us to completely close this section of the trail to the public during the shift. Signage will be up the week before to advise the public, and on the day of the closure we’ll fence off the area and put diversions in place for pedestrians and cyclists. Access will remain for residents who live along the section of the footpath.
