Our new tram-trains have arrived at their Taff’s Well home
The first of our new Metro tram-trains have arrived at their new home in our £100 million Taff’s Well depot.
Powered by both electrical overhead line equipment and battery power, they’ll be much greener than our current trains. They’re also far quieter, creating less noise for our lineside neighbours.
Our tram-trains are designed to operate as both conventional trains on existing railway lines and as trams on future Metro extensions, transforming the way all of us travel across the region.
Each of the 36 units are three carriages long, seating 126 passengers with a total capacity of 252 people. There’re also four bicycle spaces per tram-train and level boarding ramps to significantly improve accessibility for all our customers.
In combination with track, signalling and station improvements, they’ll enable 12 trains per hour to travel between Pontypridd and Cardiff via Taff’s Well, in each direction. It’s a significant increase in capacity and, where possible, certain services will also operate in doubled-up formation too.
