A safe place for bikes at school

In 2024, Gwynedd Council decided to build new cycle storage facilities at Ysgol Cymerau Primary School in Pwllheli. This was in response to requests from schoolchildren and community leaders to create more safe spaces for pupils to store their bikes.

The aims were:

  • to increase the amount of secure, sheltered cycle storage at Ysgol Cymerau.
  • to support the wider trend of children cycling to school in Gwynedd.

Description

Ysgol Cymerau ranked 5th in Wales during the Big Walk and Wheel 2024, with over 80% of pupils taking part.

Council officers met with the school’s headteacher and secretary, as well as representatives from Sustrans to consider how to increase the amount of cycle storage.

They agreed that covered, secure storage facilities adjacent to the school entrance would be the best option.

Lessons learnt

  • Collaboration between the council, school and Sustrans was key to successfully delivering the project.
  • There is a strong commitment from staff at Ysgol Cymerau to supporting initiatives to increase the number of pupils walking and cycling to school e.g. the ‘bike bus’.
  • Ysgol Cymerau pupils are enthusiastic about walking and cycling to school.

Cost

  • The cost of the scheme was just under £26,500.

Outputs

The new storage facilities can accommodate 10 bikes in each shelter, which is enough space for 30 bikes.

A scooter shelter has also been built, which can accommodate 20 scooters.
