Overview
Located in the gorgeous Welsh town of Abercynon, in the Cynon Valley, this station was opened in 1840 and has gone through several reincarnations to arrive at today's building. Nestled in the stunning tree-covered valley, the station feels miles from anywhere, a far cry from the area's famous roots as the destination for the very first steam train ride in the winter of 1804.
Abercynon's fame continued with a visit by the British Royal Train in April 2012. As part of Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee celebratory tour of Wales, the sharp curves of the rail track foiled the Royal Train, and the passengers had to continue their tour by road.
