History of Bargoed station

Bargoed station opened on 31 March 1858 as part of the Rhymney Railway. It grew into a busy junction, with lines branching off to Newport via Bedwas and to Brecon via the Brecon and Merthyr Tydfil Junction Railway. The town developed rapidly as a centre of the coal industry through the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The station was a key link between the community and Cardiff.

Both branch lines closed to passengers on 31 December 1962. The junction site and trackbed of the old Brecon line are still visible to the north of the station today. Bargoed remains an important stop on the Rhymney line, connecting the town and surrounding communities with Cardiff Central.
