Overview
Situated on the Cambrian line, and serving the village of Caersws in mid Wales, Caersws station was first opened in January 1863. John Ceiriog Hughes, the well known Welsh poet, lived in the station house as manager for around 20 years until his death in 1887. Hughes, arguably one of the foremost Welsh language poets, won the 1958 Llangollen Eisteddfod with his now-famous poem "Myfanwy Fychan o Gastell Dinas Brân".
Hughes’ former accommodation - the station master’s house was awarded its Grade II listed status in 1991, and 22 years later the station was awarded first place in the "Wales’ Best Unstaffed Train Station" competition.
