Overview
In south east Wales, Newbridge station serves the towns of Newbridge and Blackwood and is on the Ebbw Valley line. Opened in the winter of 1850, the original station closed just over a century later, with the current line reopening in 2008, complete with a footbridge allowing passengers easy access to the town centre.
Newbridge grew around the mining industry in the 19th century, which built on the already established farming sector, and brought workers into the region. The industry eventually dwindled in the 80s, and the old collieries were reclaimed by nature, with red kites, buzzards and kestrels being spotted regularly.
Blackwood, too, has coal at its heart but has gone on to host a string of successful high tech companies. The home of rock band Manic Street Preachers, who released the influential single A Design for Life and the big hit of the 2000s You Stole the Sun from My Heart, Blackwood has a rich history and is well worth a visit.
