Wales National Travel Survey

The Wales National Travel Survey (WNTS) is a large, annual, random-sample survey designed to collect data on travel attitudes and behaviours from people across Wales. It includes questions for users and non-users of different transport modes, as well as a two-day travel diary.

The WNTS will provide TfW and Welsh Government with reliable, robust data to track progress towards Welsh Government’s transport targets and commitments.

These data are published as official statistics in development.

Travel attitudes

The travel attitudes report is based on the opinions and attitudes of respondents for modes of travel.

This report includes details on how frequently they use different travel modes, satisfaction, feeling of welcomeness they experienced, affordability of public transport and feeling bothered by noise.

Travel behaviours

The travel behaviours report is based on data from actual travel patterns and choices that respondents made. This was recorded in a two-day retrospective travel diary, where respondents were asked how, why, when and where they travelled.

This report includes details on mode share, multimodal journeys, journey distances and journey purposes.

Factors that would encourage modal shift to sustainable travel modes

The modal shift report is based on the factors that would encourage respondents who are users and non-users of certain travel modes to use them more often, as well as the reasons why respondents choose to travel by car.
