Travelling with us over Christmas and the New Year?
Our train services are usually busy over the festive period with people out and about shopping, visiting friends and family as well as exploring the many Christmas attractions on our network.
Here’s some useful tips to consider when planning your journey with us this Christmas.
Changes to train services
Check before you travel as there may be planned improvement works that could affect your journey plans.
There are no train or rail replacement bus services on:
- Christmas Day (Wednesday 25 December 2024)
- Boxing Day (Thursday 26 December 2024) or
- New Year’s Day (Wednesday 1 January 2025) on local Cardiff and Valleys lines only*
*with the exception of Cardiff – Barry Island / Penarth/ Vale of Glamorgan lines.
Train services will start close down from 20:00 on:
- Christmas Eve (Tuesday 24 December 2024)
- New Year’s Eve (Tuesday 31 December 2024)
Train services will start later than usual on Friday 27 December 2024.
Off-Peak restrictions are lifted from Friday 27 December and come back on Thursday 2 January 2025.
Traveling to, from or through Crewe between Tuesday 24 December 2024 - Thursday 2 January 2025?
Work is taking place to commission a major upgrade for freight services in Crewe. Rail replacement services are in operation and timetables are amended. Please plan your journey in advance.

All Manchester Piccadilly services will start / terminate at Shrewsbury with road replacement transport in place between Shrewsbury and Stockport. Ticket acceptance will be in place at Stockport for passengers wishing to travel to Manchester Piccadilly.

Crewe to Chester / Shrewsbury shuttles are cancelled with road replacement transport in place.

North Wales Coast services will now start / terminate at Chester with road replacement transport between Chester and Crewe.

Avanti West Coast and London Northwestern Railway services will also be affected. Please check before you travel.

Saturday 28 December to Tuesday 31 December

Buses will replace trains between Shrewsbury and Crewe.

Northbound services to Manchester Piccadilly will divert via Chester and terminate at Crewe.

Southbound services from Manchester Piccadilly will start at Crewe and divert via Chester.

A shuttle train service will operate between Crewe and Manchester Piccadilly all day at the usual times.

Our lost property office will be closed on Wednesday 25 December and Thursday 26 December 2024.
Travel Management Services
Our Travel Management Services will be closed between Monday 23 December 2024 – Friday 27 December 2024 and on Wednesday 01 January 2025.
