Top tips for walking and wheeling
Walking and wheeling are great ways to get out in nature and explore Wales. Here are some top tips for staying safe in the countryside.
Be prepared in case you lose signal
Online maps and apps are great until you lose signal. Ensure you’ve downloaded your route or have a physical map so you can always get home. We’ve partnered with Go Jauntly to provide maps for our routes.
Check the weather
Check the forecast before setting off. Rain, snow and fog can all make for a more challenging walk. Make sure you have suitable clothing or rearrange for a pleasanter day.
Remember your waterproofs
If you can rely on one thing in Wales, it’s the rain! Make sure you’ve got an anorak and some waterproof trousers.
Pack some warm clothes
A spare fleece or jumper in your backpack can keep you warm while you enjoy your picnic, or if the weather turns.
Let someone you trust know your route and expected return time
If something goes wrong and you do not return on time, they can raise the alarm.
Keep hydrated
It’s vital to stay hydrated, especially in hot weather. Take more than you think you might need. A flask of tea can make for a top-tier break mid route!
Respect the countryside
Getting outdoors should be for everyone. The Countryside Code offers tips for how to help look after the countryside.
Check the bus and train times
If you’re using public transport to get to and from your walk, check our train and bus times.
