Network Rail have reported weather warnings for heavy sleet and snow in the area and have closed the railway to all services.

You cannot travel - there are no trains running and we are unable to run Rail Replacement Bus services.

Weather warnings for heavy sleet and snow are in place in the area, meaning rail services are likely to be delayed and cancelled. Due to the forecasted severe weather, we expect local road conditions to be poor so in the event of cancelled services, we may not be able to provide road transport.

Network Rail have reported weather warnings for heavy sleet and snow will affect the Heart of Wales line between Llanelli and Shrewsbury and have closed the railway to all services from 1500. You cannot travel - there are no trains running and we are unable to run Rail Replacement Bus services.

Train services are now running every 30 minutes.

Due to forecasted severe weather between Cardiff Central (CDF) and Barry Island (BYI):

Services may be cancelled in both directions between Cardiff Central (CDF) and Barry Island (BYI).

We expect the incident to last until the end of the day and disruption to services is expected from 14:00 on 08/01/2026 until the end of the day.

Due to forecasted adverse weather in the South Wales rail services between Cardiff Central and Barry Island may be cancelled from 14:00. Passengers are being advised to avoid travel.


There is an hourly train service running from Cardiff Central to Barry town.


A limited number of Rail Replacement Bus Services are running. Alternative travel options:


We have organised buses to run between Cardiff Central and Barry Island to assist customers to complete journeys where possible at no extra cost. These will depart both stations hourly and are being provided by bus companies Teulu and Watts.


Road Transport will take longer than rail services. Please allow extra time to complete your journey.

Services may be cancelled in both directions between Cardiff Central (CDF) and Merthyr Tydfil (MER).

We expect the incident to last until the end of the day and disruption to services is expected from 14:00 on 08/01/2026 until the end of the day.

Customers are advised to travel only if necessary on the next available service. An hourly service will be running between Cardiff Central and Merthyr Vale. We are currently sourcing a bus to shuttle between Merthyr Vale and Merthyr Tydfil. Please note, other routes and services are affected by this incident. Please check your journey at tfw.wales.

Due to forecasted severe weather between Cardiff Central (CDF) and Bridgend (BGN):

Services may be cancelled in both directions between Cardiff Central (CDF) and Bridgend (BGN).

We expect the incident to last until the end of the day and disruption to services is expected from 14:00 on 08/01/2026 until the end of the day.

Due to forecasted adverse weather in the South Wales area rail services between Cardiff Central and Bridgend via the VOG may be cancelled from 14:00. Passengers are being advised to avoid travel.

We have organised buses to run between Barry and Bridgend to assist customers to complete journeys where possible at no extra cost. These will depart both stations on the hour and are being provided by bus companies Pencoed and Ridgeway.

Due to forecasted severe weather between Radyr (RDR) and Cardiff Central (CDF):

Services may be cancelled in both directions between Radyr (RDR) and Cardiff Central (CDF).

We expect the incident to last until the end of the day and disruption to services is expected from 15:00 until the end of the day.

Due to forecasted adverse weather in the South Wales area rail services between Cardiff Central and Radyr via Ninian Park are cancelled from 15:00. All services will be diverted via Llandaf and Cathays. Passengers are being advised to avoid travel to cancelled stations. You cannot travel by train - there are no trains running along this route. Please check your journey at www.tfw.wales.


Customers can use local bus services between Radyr and Cardiff to help you complete your journey, at no extra cost:

  • 1, 1A, 2, 2A, 61, 62 and 63 Cardiff Bus services.

Problems on our trains

Severe Weather forecast for Wales and Cross Borders Routes

From 15:00 on Thursday 8 January until end of service on Friday 9th January, no trains will be able to operate on the following routes:

  • Llandudno Junction to Llandudno - suspended.
  • Llandudno Junction to Blaenau Ffestiniog - suspended.
  • Wrexham to Bidston - suspended.
  • Craven Arms to Swansea service (via Heart of Wales Line) - suspended.
  • Services west of Carmarthen - suspended.
  • Maesteg and Ebbw services - suspended.

From 15:00 on Thursday 8 January until end of service on Friday 9th January, a reduced timetable will be introduced, with the following services operating:

  • 1 train per hour (tph) Carmarthen - Cardiff Central.
  • 1 tph Cardiff Central - Crewe.
  • 1 tph Shrewsbury - Holyhead.
  • 1 train every two hours Shrewsbury - Aberystwyth.
  • 1 train every two hours on the Shrewsbury to Crewe local service.
  • 1 tph Birmingham International - Shrewsbury.
  • 1 tph Cardiff Central - Gloucester.
  • 1 tph Chester – Manchester.

Due to poor road conditions rail replacement services and TrawsCymru routes are also affected. Please check your journey before travelling.
