Meet our graduates

Jonathan

First-year Bus Graduate

It helped me discover what I’m passionate about and how I work best.

Being on the TfW Graduate Scheme has been a brilliant experience that’s helped me discover what I’m passionate about and how I work best. The rotations have been a great introduction to the various types of transport planning TfW does.

I’ve loved having the opportunity to create an accessible and inclusive public transport network for Welsh future generations. During my time on the graduate scheme, I’ve been able to write policy and influence decisions that directly impact the services TfW will deliver in coming years. It’s great to know my work will give more people in Wales the confidence to use public transport, walk, wheel and cycle.

Owen

First-year Transport Planning Graduate

I highly recommend this as a starting point for your career.

A graduate role in the Transport Planning and Development team has been an ideal beginning for my career in transport. I wanted to work on projects that make a difference to people's lives and improve the transport network where I live.

I've had the opportunity to work on transformative rail projects in South East Wales and get involved with bus, active travel. The scheme’s rotations let me work in several Transport Planning teams, collaborate with many colleagues and experience different projects. I'm thoroughly enjoying it and would highly recommend this as a starting point for your career in transport.

Victoria

First-year Commercial Graduate

The best decision I made after university.

I’m a year into the scheme and it’s been brilliant – far more than just a day job. I’ve had the chance to explore new fields, take part in various courses and connect with people across TfW. The rotations let me try my hand at everything, helping me find my strengths and tackle my weaknesses.

You aren't just given simple tasks, you’re part of a team making a real difference. Although my main role is based in head office, the scheme has opened doors to the wider organisation. I’ve had opportunities to volunteer at stations and attend events across Wales with the Special Events team, Early Talent team and Young Rail Professionals.

I’ve had an incredible support network, including the Early Talent team, fellow graduates and my manager. Their support has made even the biggest challenges manageable. Joining the scheme was the best decision I made after university. A year in, I’m a more confident and well-rounded person.

Ifan

Former Operations Graduate

The support from the Early Talent team and my managers has been fantastic.

My journey with TfW started when I secured a six-month internship with the Operations Readiness team during my second year at university. The opportunity to gain hands-on experience in an operations team in an evolving organisation attracted me to TfW.

I gained vast knowledge – not only about integrating brand-new trains onto the Wales and Borders network, but about stepping into a workplace environment while at university. This opportunity not only increases your employability skills and attributes, it provides invaluable experience, skills and connections.

After graduating, I returned to TfW through the Rail Operations Management graduate scheme. It let me rotate across a multitude of functions, from drivers and conductors to control, fleet, commercial and even our delivery partners at Network Rail and Amey.

The support provided by the Early Talent team, my line manager and rotation managers gave me new opportunities, skills and experiences. I’ve been involved in planning the Eisteddfod in Pontypridd, integrating new trains on our network and learning how our control centres keep that network running. The knowledge I gained empowered me to secure a position as Assistant Project Manager in Customer Operations. I’m looking forward to getting stuck in.
