History of Chester station

There were originally two stations which both opened in 1840, before being combined to serve the city of Chester and the surrounding areas. Constructed from the iconic rich blue Staffordshire stone and warm grey Storeton sandstone in an ornate style modelled on Italian classical architecture, Chester station is situated adjacent to the impressive city walls.

Be sure to look at the vast wooden beams above Platform 4. Royal sculptor John Thomas carved several beautiful owls here - a much-loved feature originally designed to deter pigeons from nesting.

Popular with shopaholics, Brook Street lies right on the station’s doorstep, and just beyond that, the city centre, overlooked by the magnificent cathedral.
