Rhymney Line Transformation Work

Beginning in at the end of March, we'll be undertaking an intensive 8-month programme of engineering work on the upper Rhymney line, from Caerphilly to Rhymney station, that will transform and electrify over 15km of railway line. These infrastructure improvements will enable electrified trains (Class 756s) to be introduced to the line, delivering faster, greener and more accessible transport to the communities of South Wales.

Planned Rail Closures & Engineering Works

To deliver this intensive 8-month programme of work safely, there will be periods where the railway line will be closed and rail replacement services in operation to keep passengers moving.

From March to October 2025, the railway line from Caerphilly to Rhymney will be closed on:

  • Mondays to Thursdays, after 7pm, starting from 31 March 2025.
  • For 6 weeks from Saturday 12 April to Friday 23 May, and from Saturday 19 July to Sunday 31 August.
  • For 2 weeks from Saturday 18 October.
  • Across several weekends (Saturday and Sundays) throughout this period

During periods where the railway line is closed, we'll replace each planned train with a bus service. These buses will travel from Rhymney/ Bargoed to Caerphilly (stopping at each station in between) and will connect with the train services from Caerphilly to Cardiff.

Mirroring the rail timetable, we'll operate a bus every 15 minutes between Caerphilly and Bargoed, and every 30 minutes between Bargoed and Rhymney.

From March to October 2025, we encourage all passengers travelling on the Rhymney line to check before you travel, due to the number of rail closures that will take place over this period.

Overview

The picturesque town of Rhymney is home to this quaint station, 20 miles north of Cardiff, and just south of the glorious Bannau Brycheiniog. Home to the Rhymney Union Ironworks, from 1801 until their closure in 1891, there was a need for a reliable transport service, and so in 1858, Rhymney Station opened.

Running all the way to Cardiff Queens Street via Bargoed, after the closure of the northern line and the reduction to one platform, the station fell into decline, with services being reduced to an hourly train to Penarth, and one to Cardiff Central.

Today, the station lacks ticket buying facilities, although the original brick building still stands. The small town of Rhymney is a beautiful place to enjoy a spot of sightseeing, and relax with some local hospitality.
