Overview
The picturesque town of Rhymney is home to this quaint station, 20 miles north of Cardiff, and just south of the glorious Bannau Brycheiniog. Home to the Rhymney Union Ironworks, from 1801 until their closure in 1891, there was a need for a reliable transport service, and so in 1858, Rhymney station opened.
Running all the way to Cardiff Queens Street via Bargoed, after the closure of the northern line and the reduction to one platform, the station fell into decline, with services being reduced to an hourly train to Penarth, and one to Cardiff Central.
Today, the station lacks ticket buying facilities, although the original brick building still stands. The small town of Rhymney is a beautiful place to enjoy a spot of sightseeing, and relax with some local hospitality.
