Visitors flock from all over the globe to experience Cardiff, the bustling, vibrant capital of Wales, and with so many attractions and places of interest, there’s something for everyone.
One of the most popular tourist sites is the imposing Cardiff Castle. Its history through the centuries has seen it take on several important roles, from Norman stronghold to Victorian mansion, and now it’s host to an impressive programme of live events, including music and theatre. Rivalling the Millennium Centre for performing arts, between the two venues, you can see ballet, opera, improv comedy and even contemporary hip hop and dance. Also on the must-see list is Cardiff Cathedral. Destroyed by incendiary bombs in World War II, it was rebuilt in the 1950s, and is now an iconic part of Cardiff’s skyline once more.
If shopping is your thing, a visit to the Queen’s Arcade will satisfy even the most determined, take in St David’s too, and all bases are covered. Both house a wide range of high street stores alongside some designer exclusives. However, if you’re after something more unusual, the gorgeous architecture of the city’s Victorian arcades hides a wealth of artisan boutiques. Quaint storefronts showcase beautiful handcrafted pieces - handmade jewellery, studio glass and art pottery, the perfect gift for someone, or something special for yourself!
For family days out, head for the exciting Cardiff International White Water. Offering exhilarating water sports, such as white water rafting and the challenge of paddleboarding, this will keep big and small kids happy. As will the Skate Plaza, but with a drier result! The Techniquest centre, with fully interactive scientific experiments, encourages a more educational, but no less fun, approach, and is well worth a visit.
