The pretty town of Neath, near Port Talbot, sits on the picturesque River Neath, and has been a settlement since Roman times. The gorgeously atmospheric and scenic Neath Abbey is one of the most important monastic remains in Wales. With ongoing preservation work, this impressive site will be there for generations to come. Transport for Wales have teamed up with CADW and are offering 2 for 1 entry to these historic sites. The Norman Neath Castle keeps watch over the centre of town. Composed of a twin-towered gatehouse, curtain walls and inner foundations, this wonderfully historic site is much loved by townsfolk, with rumours circulating for centuries that if it ever fell, so would Wales.
Neath is the birthplace of Hollywood conqueror Richard Burton, and the Richard Burton Trails follow in the great man’s footsteps from the pine clad hills of Pontrhydyfen, down to Taibach, where he grew up. You can also experience the joy he felt on proclaiming the delicious lava bread as Welsh caviar by picking up some from Neath and preparing it in the traditional way - fried up with cockles and served for breakfast!
Neath is a gorgeous place to visit, whether for business or pleasure, and going by train is a cost effective, relaxing way to arrive. Download our app to keep abreast of our best deals, and by following us on Twitter, you’ll hear all the news first.
