Can dogs go on TfW trains?

When it comes to travelling with your dog, the train is perfect. It’s fast, quiet and calming, ideal for a stress-free journey for dogs and owners.

You can bring up to two dogs (free) on our trains, provided they’re well-behaved and don’t disturb other customers. If you need to travel with more than two dogs, please contact customer.relations@tfw.wales and let us know before travelling.

You’ll have to keep your dog on a lead or in a carrier, whichever is better for your four-legged friend. Unfortunately, they’re not allowed on seats, so please keep all four paws on the floor.

Tips for travelling by train with your dog

Travelling can be stressful for dogs. Here are some tips when taking your dog on the train.

  • Start off small - for your dog’s first time on the train, take a short journey to help them get used to the noises, smells and movement of the train.
  • Take plenty of supplies - bring their favourite treats and water. You can reward their good behaviour too.
  • Carrier or lead - you know your dog best. Choose which is best suited to their temperament.
  • Get them to go before travel - make sure they relieve themselves before travelling.
  • Bring the poo bags and wipes - just in case the worst happens.
  • Pay attention - keep a close eye on their behaviour and support your dog if they seem anxious.
  • Avoid busy periods - avoid rush hour if you can to reduce stress.
  • Check the temperature - especially in winter, trains can be warm. Make sure they don’t get too hot.
