About Newport railway station
The station was first opened in 1850 and was expanded in 1928 due to the closure of two nearby stations - Mill Street and Dock Street. Today its four platforms cope with nearly three million passengers annually from across Wales and the UK.
In 2007, yet another redevelopment began costing approximately £20 million. This included a new pedestrian bridge, platform extensions and a stylish bus-rail interchange making it easy for passengers to get around. Architecturally, the station design takes its inspiration from the iconic domes of the Eden Project. The glass roofs flood the concourse with light, creating a spacious, contemporary feel.
Check out our guide on the numerous things to do in Newport. You’ll find it a vibrant city with a fascinating history and plenty of places to shop or enjoy a bite to eat.
