Aberdare to Hirwaun Metro extension

We’re working with Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council, Welsh Government and the Cardiff Capital Region to look at how we can bring the existing rail track between Aberdare and Hirwaun back into use. These discussions are at an early stage but initial studies have been undertaken as part of South Wales Metro.

The opening of the Aberdare to Hirwaun line will create more access to jobs, healthcare provision and education. It will transform  lives and reduce the environmental impact of our transport network.

Further surveys and investigation are required to determine the condition of the existing line and future infrastructure requirements. The project will be open to public consultation with feedback being taken in to account to make sure that the local community is at the heart of the plans.

Part of the CCRTA Metro Plus programme, the project is progressing through the WelTAG requirements set out by the Welsh Government. This ensures that a robust method is followed to analyse and assess problems and options and develop solutions.
