We’re rolling out new toilets as part of the South Wales Metro

Very soon, we’ll be rolling out our new tram-trains on the Treherbert, Aberdare and Merthyr lines. These innovative vehicles are key to delivering our Metro timetable, with faster and more frequent services, and the ability to expand our network in the future.

These new trains will offer several benefits for our customers, including improved access from train to platform and more space on board for wheelchairs users and bikes.

Like other Metro systems across the UK, our tram-trains do not have toilets on board.

So that customers won’t be caught short, we’re installing nine new toilets and upgrading five of our existing toilets at key stations across the Treherbert, Aberdare and Merthyr lines. All these new toilets are fully accessible, and all have baby changing facilities included.

This means customers should never be more than 20 minutes away from a station with a toilet when travelling on the Metro network.

Toilets are already available at Pontypridd, Trefforest, Cardiff Queen Street and Cardiff Central. We’ll be opening our new toilets as soon as they’re ready.

FAQs

Why are there no toilets on board the tram-trains?

Metro has been designed to deliver high frequency, turn-up-and-go services, with better connections between Cardiff and the Valleys. Like other similar Metro systems across the UK, our tram-trains do not have toilet facilities on board.

That’s why we’re installing new toilets across our network to make sure there’s always one nearby.

How do I access the toilets?

To access the toilets, press the open button next to the toilet door. This button links to our Central Control Centre, where our team will unlock the door for you.

When no one is inside the toilet, the doors will be automatically locked. This reduces anti-social behaviour and helps to prevent vandalism. The outside of the toilets is covered by a newly installed CCTV system, which is monitored live from our control centre.

Help points are also located on the inside and outside of the toilets, which also connect live to our team in our control centre when pressed.

What are the opening hours of the toilets?

You can find existing station toilets at Pontypridd, Trefforest, Cardiff Queen Street and Cardiff Central with their opening hours listed above and on our station pages: Railway stations near you

Our new toilets will open before the first service of the day and will remain open until the last train of the day has departed. They’ll be locked overnight.

Why are you not installing new toilets on the Rhymney or Coryton lines?

We’ll continue to run our trains with toilets (Class 756) on these lines. Station toilets are available at Cardiff Queen Street and Cardiff Central.

How were the locations for new toilets selected?

The locations of our new toilets have been partially determined by timetable modelling. Once Metro is fully complete, our services will be more frequent with journey times reduced. The location of the new toilets mean that customers should never be more than 20 minutes from a toilet when travelling on our Metro network.

We’ve also chosen locations based on their accessibility. All our toilets are located at stations which have either a single platform or an accessible footbridge if there are two platforms. This ensures that passengers can easily get between each platform if they need to use our toilets.

Why are you running tram-trains on the Merthyr, Aberdare and Treherbert lines and not keeping the ones we have now (Class 756s)?

The new tram-trains will run on the Merthyr, Aberdare and Treherbert lines to Cardiff, with some services continuing onwards to Cardiff Bay. These lines are fully electrified, with the tram-trains being powered by overhead electrified wires and battery through short sections. Their fast acceleration speeds mean they’re key to delivering a service every 15 minutes between the top of these Valleys and Cardiff.

The Class 756s that are currently running on these lines are tri-mode. This means they have the unique ability to run on both electrified and non-electrified sections of the railway. Due to this, they’ll be moved onto the Rhymney line, travelling to Cardiff and then onwards to Bridgend and Barry Island. As the section from Cardiff Central to Bridgend and Barry Island is not electrified, the 756s will use their unique ability to switch to battery and diesel power on this part of the network.

Are the toilets accessible?

Yes, all of our new and refurbished toilets are fully accessible and Persons with Reduced Mobility compliant. This includes space for wheelchair users to access, with support rails and emergency help points. Each pod is also equipped with baby changing facilities.

Key signage will also include Braille to support those with visual impairments.

Will the toilets be clean?

Our toilets will be cleaned throughout the day by our mobile cleaning team.

If you need to report any issues with cleanliness, you can press the help buttons on the outside or inside of the toilets and talk to a member of our control team. You can also text our WhatsApp number 07790 952 507.

What do I do if my nearest toilet is out of order?

We’ll tell you through our app or website when a toilet is out of use or has reduced facilities. We’ll also aim to tell you where your nearest alternative toilet is located. As we’ve installed toilets at lots of our stations, your nearest toilet shouldn’t be too far away.

You can also use Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Community Toilet Scheme website to find a nearby toilet.

Public toilets can also be found on the Welsh Government website.

Will the toilet be safe to use if it’s at an un-staffed station?

We want our customers to feel safe when using our new toilets. All our new toilets are covered by live CCTV covering the outside of the toilets. We’ve also installed improved lighting at these stations. Our security teams will patrol the network and will work closely with the British Transport Police to respond if any incidents are reported.

If you need help or feel unsafe, please use the live help points on the inside and outside of the toilets. If you’re worried for your own safety, please contact the British Transport Police by texting 61016.

Always call 999 in an emergency.

Will the tram-train wait for me if I need to get off to use the toilet?

No. To keep our network and customers moving, if you need to use the toilet, you’ll need to get off the train at a station with a toilet and then wait for the next service.

When our Metro timetable is up and running, we’ll have trains running every 15 minutes on most parts of the network.

What time do the toilets close and what happens on the last train home?

Our new toilets will stay open until the last train has departed the station. Customers are advised to use toilet facilities before boarding the train.

Until late 2026, we’ll continue to use our Class 756 trains on our last services of the day. These trains have toilets on board.

After this, we’ll replace our Class 756s with our tram-trains, adding dedicated toilet stops to our timetable on late-night services. This will allow customers to get off and use the toilet, before getting back on and continuing their journey.

How do I report a problem with the toilets?

You can report any issues with the toilets

  • Through our help points located on the outside and inside of the toilets.
  • Text our WhatsApp number 07790 952 507.
  • Call us on 03333 211 202.
  • Contact a member of our train crew or station staff.

What do I do if the toilet door doesn’t open?

In an emergency, use the push to call button on the inside of the toilet so we can assist you. If there’s a power failure, the door will automatically unlock, pull it to the left to open.

If you’re unable to open the door, pull the emergency cord and one of our colleagues will come and help you. Alternatively, call us on 03333 211 202.

Engagement with Accessibility and Community Groups

We know this is a significant change for our customers, and it’s important that our plans reflect the needs of everyone who uses our network, particularly those with disabilities or accessibility needs who rely on access to toilets when travelling.

In autumn 2025, we held a series of focus groups with key accessibility and community groups across the Valleys. These sessions helped us shape our plans and understand how best to communicate changes to customers.

Key themes from the focus groups included:

  • General awareness that tram trains do not have toilets on board, although fewer people were aware of the reasons for this.
  • Strong support for installing more toilets at stations.
  • A clear preference for toilets accessed via a push to open button with a live connection to our control centre, to support safety and cleanliness.
  • Positive feedback on all new toilets being fully accessible.

If you would like to comment on our plans or share your feedback, please contact our Customer Relations team on 03333 211 202 or message us on WhatsApp on 07790 952 507.
