Wales National Travel Survey Pilot Testing

Pilot Study 1

A first web-only pilot of the Wales National Travel Survey (WNTS) was conducted between 3 May 2024 and 2 June 2024.

Invitation letters to participate in this pilot study were issued to 7,500 randomly selected residential addresses across Wales. Addresses were drawn from Royal Mail’s postcode address finder database.

The aim of this pilot study was to test the online questionnaire in a live environment, understand typical online response rates, test household respondent selection options and the travel diary structure and placement within the survey.

Pilot Study 2

A second pilot study of the WNTS was launched on 9 September 2024 and will run until 27 October 2024.

Invitation letters to participate in this pilot study were issued to 900 randomly selected residential addresses across Wales. Addresses were again drawn from Royal Mail’s postcode address finder database, however the locality of the addresses for this pilot were based on locations within reasonable travelling distances for the team of fieldworkers available to work on this pilot.

The aim of this second pilot is to test the end to end survey process including all of the planned sequential completion modes, online, telephone and face to face.

Further information about both pilot studies, including their  key aims and objectives, can be found in the ‘WNTS Stage 1b: Qualitative and Quantitative testing’ report. The findings from both pilot studies will be pivotal in helping to shape the final WNTS design and its supporting processes.
