Crewe to Chester

The ancient and picturesque city of Chester, protected by its well-preserved walls, is one of the most popular destinations in the UK, with people enjoying the rich historical atmosphere of old Chester. Founded by the Romans in 1 A.D., a visit to the large amphitheatre, and you can see how successful Chester was as an inhabited fortress.

As for retail therapy, the half-timber Tudor buildings that line Chester’s streets contain all the big high street names, the bright lights and modern interiors hidden behind the black and white facades. But many come to Chester to enjoy the Rows. This unique two-tiered shopping experience was designed and built over 700 years ago, and is a well preserved and much-loved part of Chester. Many of the upper-level shops are quaint boutiques offering one-off artisan pieces and handcrafted gifts - handmade silver jewellery, studio pottery and framed original paintings, for example. 

There are plenty of family-friendly interactive attractions, including Jodrell Bank Observatory, Britain’s latest Unesco World Heritage Site, and the ever-popular Chester Zoo, where adopting an animal is a great way of helping the international conservation projects, and an ongoing reminder of a lovely day out. 

After exploring, why not relax in one of the many restaurants, soaking up the atmosphere, before catching a show at the Storyhouse? This impressive award-winning £37m theatre complex has an eclectic programme of events and performances, and is the perfect way to finish off the evening, before hopping on the train back to Crewe.
