Explore Caergwrle

This route follows mostly pavements around the village. A steep climb to the castle is worth the effort and the packhorse bridge provides an interesting crossing of the river Alyn.

Caergwrle Ramblers Cymru route

- From the station exit onto the A550 and turn left. Follow for about 600m as far as a right turn called Crossways. Follow straight ahead. When the road bends right at the end there is an opportunity to detour to the playground. Otherwise carry straight ahead through the little path and you will join the main road.
- Turn right and follow into the village. When you meet a road junction by SPAR you will see a right turn up to Caergwrle castle. This steep climb is short and worth the effort to explore the old ruins. Caergwrle Castle was built between 1278- 82 by Dafydd ap Gruffudd. It was the last castle to be built by a native Welsh prince.
- Loop around the top and return by the same route. Keep SPAR on your right and follow the road through the village. When you have passed the car park on the left take the first lane on your right (signposted north Wales link path).
- Go straight over the next road and follow the path down and over the old pack horse bridge. The V shaped niches in the walls allowed pedestrians to stay out of the way of the packhorses. Follow this path up and then over the railway before going down through a small housing estate to meet the road.
- Turn right at the road and follow back for the short walk to the station.
