If you have an early or late appointment, make sure you plan your journey to and from the hospital and plan for any potential delays.

Getting to the hospital by bus

The bus can be one of the best ways to travel to a hospital. Regular services usually start early and run until late. Bus stops are often located right outside the hospital.

Bus ticket prices are affordable, with concessions for students, pensioners and more.

Some bus services let you tap on and off to pay, buy online or pay the driver. Make sure you find the best route and check the timetable before travelling. If you’re visiting a hospital to see friends and family, check the visiting hours before travelling too.

Getting to the hospital by train

If you’re travelling further for a hospital visit, or the hospital close to a station, the train can be a convenient way to travel.

If you’re travelling by bus and train, try our PlusBus tickets for the cheapest travel. You can also save on your tickets with a Railcard, by buying up to 12 weeks early and travelling off-peak when you can.

Our trains and stations are accessible. If you need help when travelling, you can book assistance, we’ll be happy to help. For more information give us a call on 03330 050 501.

Make sure you check your appointment or visiting times when buying your tickets to and from the hospital and plan for any delays.

If you work at a hospital, the train is a great way to commute. Some of our services run into England if you’re travelling across the border for an appointment, visit or work.

Walking and cycling

For those who can, walking, wheeling and cycling are healthy and free ways to get to and from hospitals. Before setting off, plan your route to make sure you know where you’re going. Using a smartphone? Download the map to avoid issues with signal dropping out.

Most hospitals and stations in Wales have bike storage. Make sure you take a secure lock. Typically, a high-quality D-lock/U-lock is best. Check the storage options before you go to make sure there are places to store your bike.

There are spaces on our trains for bikes, but these are limited. You can find out more here.

Non-Emergency Patient Transport Service

The Non-Emergency Patient Transport Service is for patients across Wales who, for medical reasons, cannot make their own way to and from hospital appointments.

It’s vital for people who need and rely on it and should not be used as an alternative to other means of getting to appointments.

Please note that a need for treatment does not automatically imply a need for transport. All patients must go through an eligibility process to check the service can be offered to them.

For patients who are not eligible, our Alternative Transport Team can discuss transport options in your area that may be able to help.

Please click here to see if you are eligible.
