Overview
Originally opened in 1863, Aberystwyth station was greatly extended and improved in 1925. The railway transformed the country town of Aberystwyth into a thriving tourist coastal resort, with hotels, new attractions and the construction of the famous Royal Pier drawing visitors from all over the UK, arriving by train.
The Vale of Rheidol Railway, a narrow-gauge steam heritage track, uses Aberystwyth as a terminus. Running through the glorious Ceredigion countryside for 12 miles, this is a great family day out.
With an impressively grand facade that won the National Railway Heritage Award in 2003, Aberystwyth station has two platforms - one of standard gauge and Rheidol's narrow gauge, catering for nearly half a million passengers every year. This is why taking the train to this town is a worthwhile endeavour, so make sure you acquaint yourself with all the interesting things to do in Aberystwyth before your next trip.
