We would like to clarify previous communication issued to the community around the features of the upgraded Cwmbach level crossing.
We previously stated that we’d installed a pedestrian traffic light system at the crossing as part of the numerous new safety features. However, we’ve had delay in sourcing the spare parts for this system (needed for contingency). To enable us to reopen the crossing as swiftly as possible for the community, we’ve taken the decision to reduce the speed of the trains in the area to allow us to re-open the crossing with an equivalent level of safety achieved through the more traditional ‘stop, look and listen’ system in place. This system is similar to those used at other level crossings on our infrastructure.
We would like to remind users of the level crossing to:
- Stop, look both ways and listen.
- If you’re on a bike, dismount and walk across the crossing.
- Supervise children and animals, and make sure dogs are kept on their lead when using the crossing.
- When the line is clear, cross quickly without running (keep looking and listening).
- Close the gates behind you.
- Be sure to look both ways and not cross until all lines are clear- Oncoming trains can be hidden by other trains passing the crossing.
- This route is not a bridleway. It is illegal and dangerous to cross the railway here on- or with- horses.
Update on Cwmbach level crossing in Cwmbach, Aberdare
As part of the South Wales Metro project, the Aberdare railway line is being transformed ready for our brand-new tram-trains. Coupled with an increase in more services per hour, this will significantly improve transport links in the local area.
Following the electrification of the railway line and in advance of the more frequent services being introduced, we need to ensure that passengers and those using railway bridges and level crossings are safe.
With the planned increased frequency of tram-trains running on the line, and with additional risks associated with electrification of the railway, Cwmbach Level Crossing had to temporarily close last year to allow us to undertake essential and significant safety improvements.
When will you be reopening the crossing?
We’re pleased to announce that we’ll be reopening Cwmbach Level Crossing on
Thursday 11 April 2024.
We’re able to do this as we’ve made important safety changes to the crossing, including the installation of new gates and CCTV. We’ve also been working to ensure that the crossing is accessible for those with prams, wheelchairs and with bicycles.
The necessary safety checks have now been completed. The teams have also been completing additional works that were required on the level crossing before it’s reopening which include removing old and laying new tarmac, as well as final signage installation.
What safety improvements have been made to the level crossing?
Since closing the crossing, we’ve installed the following safety measures:
- Cameras to help deter Anti-Social Behaviour at the crossing.
- Cutting back overgrown vegetation on either side of the crossing to improve visibility of approaching trains for those using the crossing.
- Installation of new gates on either side of the crossing.
- Additional signage at the crossing.
We would like to thank the local community for their patience throughout the period that the level crossing was closed. We understand the impact that the closure has had on residents, especially as the route is a popular walking and cycling route leading to Cwmbach Wetlands. Safety is our number one priority; we have worked hard since the crossing’s initial closure to make the level crossing as safe as possible for users.
Using the level crossing safely
As we prepare to reopen the level crossing, we would like to remind its users:
- Stop, look both ways and listen.
- To read the signs and follow the instructions carefully.
- If you’re on a bike, dismount and walk across the crossing.
- Supervise children and animals, and make sure dogs are kept on their lead when using the crossing.
- When the line is clear, cross quickly without running (keep looking and listening).
- Close the gates behind you.
- Be sure to look both ways and do not cross until all lines are clear - Oncoming trains can be hidden by other trains passing the crossing,
- This route is not a bridleway. It is illegal and dangerous to cross the railway here on - or with - horses.
We ask you to view the safety signage below and familiarise yourself with it if you are a user of the level crossing.
