Sitting on the picturesque and peaceful River Tywi, you’d never imagine this gloriously preserved town had so many legends surrounding it. With Arthur’s famous magician, Merlin, said to have been born in a cave nearby, and ‘Merlin’s Oak’ residing in the museum, Carmarthen is packed with interesting things to see and do, perfect for a family day out.
A popular first stop is the castle. Majestically overlooking the Towy, this well preserved Norman keep has served many purposes over the years, from fortress and goal to its contemporary role as home to the Tourist Information. Nearby lie the ruins of the old Roman fort that gave birth to the town in AD 75, and one of the few remaining amphitheatres.
The vast and impressive Kidwelly Castle is just outside the main town of Carmarthen, offering a powerful impression of Norman Wales. You can’t help but feel awed at the rising towers, dark corridors, and high ramparts - this is a must-see. You can enjoy 2 for 1 entry to Kidwelly Castle offer with Transport for Wales.
Don’t forget to visit the British Bird of Prey Centre. It provides a hands-on experience with these gorgeous raptors. With over 20 breeds, their aim is to conserve through education and to see the birds free-flying is breathtaking.
If you fancy a sit down after all that excitement, the Theatrau Sir Gâr has a year-round programme of performances and events. Including comedy, music, and classic shows, there’s something to suit every taste, or if shopping is your thing, there are plenty of big-name brands in the town centre. There are some hidden gems - quirky boutiques showcasing local talents and crafts, from handmade jewellery to homemade Welsh shortbread and other delicacies. Why not treat yourself for the journey home?
