The market town of Shrewsbury is located in the gorgeous county of Shropshire. Comfortably placed in the loop of the River Severn, the medieval architecture lends an atmosphere of charm and quaintness that’s quite unlike any other town.
With all the high street names, there’s plenty here to keep the most severe shopaholic happy, and if you’re after one-off gifts, or a treat for yourself, browse the many independent boutiques. Showcasing local artisan crafts, such as handmade jewellery or leatherware, there’s something to suit every taste.
Don't miss the statue of Charles Darwin outside the library. The famed naturalist was born and raised in Shrewsbury, and he is commemorated with the popular Darwin Trail around town. Watch out for the Quantum Leap sculpture on the riverbank opposite the Theatre Severn, which was erected to mark his 200th birthday.
Once a Norman power centre in medieval times, Shrewsbury Abbey was founded in 1083 on land donated by Siward the Fat. Home to Benedictine monks, after Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries, it survived as a parish church, which it still is today.
For a change of pace, head for the Falconry Centre for a hands-on experience. With hawks, owls and eagles, this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to interact with these stunning birds.
