Bangor, the oldest city in Wales, has a rich and diverse history. Lying in the northwest of the country, it offers a welcoming base for the many walkers from around the globe wanting to scale the imposing heights of nearby Mount Snowdon. Standing in excess of a daunting 3,500 feet, there are several well-worn trails to the summit, some more tricky than others.

With the granite grandeur of Penrhyn Castle and, nearby, the richly opulent cathedral, this small city isn’t short of culture and includes on its list of attractions the rarely depicted Pensive Christ. Known as the Mostyn Christ, this 15th-century carving, created from a single piece of oak, shows Christ, bound with head in hands, sitting mournfully on a rock. It represents intense suffering and draws thousands of visitors every year.

Culture vultures should head for the Storiel. Housing a museum, and theatre that has a packed programme of events and performances, it offers something to please every taste. From stand up comedy to dance and jazz, grab a coffee, a slice of homemade cake and enjoy the show. On the Storiel’s doorstep is Bangor’s vibrant shopping quarter. Not only is this home to the usual high street names, but an intriguing collection of artisanal boutiques and independent stores. Treat yourself to hand made silver jewellery, or colourful and cosy knitwear, and finish the day with a trip to the fudge shop.
