Named after the 6th century Saint Baruc, this inviting seaside resort forms part of the town of Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan. The former peninsula was joined to the mainland in the 1880s and is best known for its beach and the famous Barry Island Pleasure Park, with its arcades, rides and classic refreshments. There’s lots to see and do in Barry Island’s charming Victorian streets and seafront, including independent shops and Wales’s most bijou theatre, The Small Space - measuring just 16ft by 12ft!
Although it’s best known today for featuring in several notable TV and film productions including the BBC smash hit Gavin and Stacey, the settlement now known as Barry Island dates back to prehistoric times. Once heavily wooded, the area was home to ancient Celts before the Roman invasion, and later the Vikings. In later times, a local hero named Benedict y Diffoddwr or 'Benedict the Fighter’ is said to have defended the island from Spanish pirates. Locals believe that his ghost still protects the coastline from marauders.
With eclectic nightlife including micropubs and traditional restaurants, Barry’s got lots to offer for an evening out - with late returning trains to get you home safely. Using our free downloadable app makes it easy to plan your trip with us - we look forward to being a part of your experience!
