Located south of the country’s cosmopolitan capital, Cardiff, the peninsula of Barry is named after Baruc, the 6th-century saint. Until the 1880s, the region was isolated from the mainland, however, upon the opening of the Barry Docks, the gap that separated the two was closed, linked by the dockyard. As a coastal resort with numerous family friendly attractions, it draws holiday makers from around the world, especially as Barry Island has been granted a rare fame thanks to the hugely successful BBC series Gavin and Stacy. However, this isn’t the region’s first foray into popular culture. Dr Who spinoff Sarah Jane Adventures, Being Human, and the film, Submarine have all featured Barry Island.

The gorgeously clean Barry Beach is a must for any visitor, with glorious stretches of silvery sand, and blue sea. Enjoyed from the wide, sweeping Victorian Promenade, or with bare feet and gentle waves lapping at your ankles, it’s impossible not to fall in love with this friendly town.
Barry’s War Museum combines education with interest. Providing the opportunity to spend time ‘in the trenches’, life on the Western Front is brought into terrifying reality, while back in the UK, a genuine WW2 air raid shelter allows you to keep safe as bombs drop all around. Containing original items from the 1940s, invent tasty meals to feed to your family. This collection of exhibits demonstrates how tough our parents and grandparents had it, and how lucky we now are.
For a gentle stroll through the cool woodlands, and meadows rich with flora and fauna, head to Porthkerry Country Park. With over 200 acres, including a secret beach and dramatic cliffs, this oasis of calm is perfect for family picnics, games and more. Nature trails, an adventure play area, and a cafe offering delicious homemade cakes are found just a short distance from the main car park.
