The site of a Roman fort, Abergavenny grew into an impressive medieval town, surrounded by protective walls, within the folklore-rich Welsh Marches. Home to many of the artefacts and relics found in the region, Abergavenny Castle, constructed in 1087, is just to the south of the town’s centre. Surviving many blows to its defences, from drawn-out sieges to being sacked by the Welsh, it has stood the test of time. The museum is housed in the adjacent hunting hall. The surrounding formal gardens are impeccably maintained and have splendid views over the Usk valley.
For a culture fix, head for the nearby Borough Theatre. With a year-round programme of events, performances and exhibitions, there’s something to suit everyone, whether you enjoy live music, stand up comedy or an art show. There’s also an eclectic mix of workshops and activities to take part in, including artisan baking, textile classes, or painting with watercolours.
