Undeniably the most popular landmark in Llandudno, The Great Orme stands out literally and figuratively. This limestone headland rises 679 feet above sea level, giving its visitors a wonderful view of the Bay and its surrounding areas. There are two ways to get to the top, you can take either the Llandudno Cable Car or the Great Orme Tramway.
The Llandudno Cable Car holds the record of Britain’s longest cable car lift. The brightly coloured cabins will take you on the mile journey to the summit with its breathtaking views. You may even spot the white, shaggy Kashmiri goats, descendants of a pair gifted to Queen Victoria by the Shah of Persia, grazing on the steep headland.
Nearby are the Bronze Age copper mines, dating from 1100 BC. In the 19th century, the area was known as the Welsh California after the rich veins that surround this site. The Mining Centre documents the area’s fascinating history, offering guided tours through the underground tunnels, where copper seams still sparkle.
On the slopes of The Great Orme is Happy Valley, home to an amazing range of flora and fauna. Happy Valley was a quarry which was given to Llandudno as a gift in celebration of Queen Victoria’s Jubilee in 1887 and later was developed into wonderful gardens, parklands and woods. After a gentle stroll, everyday life just fades away, leaving you feeling at peace with the world.
Finish your trip by watching the sun set over Llandudno Pier. Stretching nearly 300 feet across the waves, it’s considered the longest one in all of Wales. With paddling pools, cafes and plenty of ice-cream stalls, this is the perfect end to your day out.
