Here are some simple ways to save money on your train tickets.
Buy early
You can buy your train tickets up to 12 weeks early with an Advance ticket. Generally, the closer you are to the date of travel, the more expensive your ticket will be. Try and buy as soon as you know when you’ll be taking a trip. Not sure when you’re heading back? Choose an Open Return for greater flexibility.
Travel during quiet times
Travelling at quieter times of day can cut the price of your ticket by up to 50%. Off-Peak tickets are generally available between 09:00/30 and 16:00, then after 18:30 (depending on your location).
Use a Railcard
Railcard discounts range from student, senior and group savers to location discounts. Find a Railcard that works for you to save around ⅓ on the price of your ticket. Make sure you have it when travelling to ensure the discount is valid.
Get a Family ticket
Ideal for family travel, two children under 16 can travel free-of-charge with a fare-paying adult using a Family train ticket. They're perfect for a family trip, whether you’re heading into your local town or city or heading off on a family holiday.
Get a Season ticket
Frequent traveller? Save money with a Season ticket. It’s ideal if you’re commuting daily, a few times a week, or have a period when you know you’ll travel frequently by train. There are several different Season tickets to choose from to help cut your ticket price.
