Introduction

Ironman Wales is legendary in the global triathlon community, known for its breathtaking Pembrokeshire scenery, its brutal hilly course, and arguably the most passionate spectator support on the circuit.

Choosing the train for your Ironman journey is a smart move. With massive road closures throughout Pembrokeshire on race day, rail travel allows you to bypass the traffic and parking headaches, ensuring you arrive at the transition zone with your energy focused entirely on the 140.6-mile journey ahead.

What to expect

Ironman Wales is a full-distance triathlon that transforms the medieval town of Tenby into a theatre of human endurance.

  • The iconic swim: The race begins with a spectacular 2.4-mile sea swim at Tenby North Beach. Thousands of spectators line the "zigzag" stairs and cliffs to watch the sunrise start, creating an atmosphere that many athletes describe as the best in the world.
  • The hilly bike: The 112-mile bike course winds through the picturesque but demanding hills of Pembrokeshire. From steep climbs to technical descents, it’s a course that rewards grit and resilience.
  • The town run: The final 26.2-mile marathon is a four-loop course through the heart of Tenby. The narrow streets are packed with crowds four-deep, providing a wall of sound that carries runners to the famous red-carpet finish line on the Esplanade.
  • IRONKIDS: It's a family affair on the Saturday before the main event, thousands of children take part in Ironkids races, earning their own medals in front of the same iconic backdrop.

When: Traditionally scheduled for a Sunday in early-to-mid September. This year, the event runs on Sunday, 13 September 2026.

How to get there: Tenby station is perfectly positioned for the event, just a 10-minute walk from the main race village and transition area.
