Overview
The town of Wrexham in Wales is served by two stations, Wrexham Central being the other.
Opening in 1846, it was expanded in 1912 to cope with increased passenger numbers. The rebuild was carried out by Great Western Railways (GWR), the company that executed many of the UK's station renovations around that time. They favoured an ornate 'French Pavillion' design, creating an easily recognised style, and so Wrexham General received the same look, with stone from the original 1846 building being used.
After suffering damage from a runaway freight carriage in 1997, a refurbishment was required, including new roofing, and repointing the brickwork; however, the GWR style was retained overall.
Today, the busy station serves approximately half a million passengers leaving and arriving on the four platforms every year.
