On the outskirts of Hereford lies Longtown Castle, a well-preserved motte and bailey castle, its thick round walls standing guard since the 12th-century. Originally part of a long line of Roman forts, the ditch was eventually widened with the spoils creating the motte, and this is how it stood for thousands of years. It’s a gorgeous spot for a sunny day picnic, and any youngsters will love exploring while you relax.
Around the time that the castle was built, the Mappa Mundi was created. Now safely preserved in Hereford Cathedral, this ancient map records what scholars knew of the world. This medieval treasure is glorious in its detail, and is well worth a visit.
Still on the theme of ancient history, Battlelands Paintball allows you to recreate those dramatic battles, via the medium of paint, or enjoy a spot of laser clay shooting, while at the nearby Raceway, try your hand (and nerves) at go-karting.
If you need a spot of culture after all that excitement, head for the Courtyard Theatre. An eclectic variety of performances fills their year-round programme - from edgy comedy to musicals, why not grab a coffee from the cafe while you decide what to watch.
The city centre has all the big high street brands and more besides. Quaint boutiques showcase local talents, with paintings, studio pottery and chunky knits lying alongside handmade fudge and delicious home bakes.
Catching the train home at the end of the day, you can relax and reflect. Download our easy-to-use app to keep abreast of all the latest deals.
