On the border between Wales and England, this market town is known as the Gateway to Wales. With the meeting place of the River Usk and the smaller Gavenny on its doorstep, Abergavenny is an area steeped in history and folklore. With a rich culture and heritage dating back to the Iron Age, there’re lots of attractions to keep visitors interested.
For outdoor explorers the region is crisscrossed by trails, forming the perfect base if you enjoy cycling and wish to bring your own bike with you. Overshadowed by the Black Mountains and Bannau Brycheiniog, Offa's Dyke Path lies to the north, and the Usk Valley Walk meanders through the nearby landscape.
South of the town centre sits the once-proud Abergavenny Castle. Now a ruin, it was built in 1087 and included an impressive stone keep, towers, kitchens, and a chapel. An imposing wall surrounded the entire complex and parts of this remain. Over the centuries the castle has been witness to many bloody battles and sieges, but now is home to the town’s museum. Housing large collections of treasures and artefacts, it also showcases locally produced art and crafts.
For a different type of culture, head for the nearby Borough Theatre. With a jam-packed programme of events and exhibitions, there’s something for all the family here - live comedy, music, or even contemporary dance performances. Everyone is welcome at the eclectic mix of workshops that are run from here, including bread-making, textile classes, and painting in oils.
